At Orchard Software, we stay abreast of all industry happenings and regulatory requirements that can be supported by your laboratory information systems (LIS). For example, a major focus in microbiology continues to be promoting better use of antibiotics. To improve antimicrobial stewardship, data must be collected to help understand prescribing practices and their impact.
In 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) began requiring hospitals to report Antimicrobial Use and Resistance (AUR) data as part of the Public Health and Clinical Data Exchange objective of the Promoting Interoperability Program. AUR is used to track antimicrobial resistant infections and evaluate antibiotic use trends over time. Providing antimicrobial usage reports to providers can improve appropriate antimicrobial use. This large-scale data analysis promotes antimicrobial stewardship and ultimately impedes the transmission of resistant pathogens.
Orchard’s solutions support this stewardship effort by sending the required data to EMRs to automate the submission of designated antibiotic interpretations and susceptibility results.
